Whining noise on Outlander 650XT
I've been in possession of my '08 Can-Am Outlander 650 XT for about 2 weeks. Unbelievably comfortable ride, probably the best I have ever experienced. This machine is also loaded for bear when it comes to its powerplant; it would bury my 680cc Rincon. Having said all of that, however, I do have one concern and that is the high-pitched whine this machine produces when reaching 36 mph. It's pretty loud and somewhat annoying. Now, I don't stay at 36 mph for long, because the noise disapates before and after reaching this speed, but I was wondering if this is normal, and if anyone else running this ATV has experienced the same obnoxious sound. I await your thoughts...

I've riddin a few Outlanders and have not heard them do what you describe. None of my buddies that have them mention it. All CVT machines will have some belt noise, whining, and some more than others. But the aggrevating, Dachsund got hit by a car whine is not normal. There are some guys with Can Ams on this forum who will reply. Until then I'd be concerned enough to be calling the dealer in the morning. For the money they cost there should be nothing annoying about it, and I'd expect it to be fixed for the weekend.

I recommend taking it to your dealer and have them ride it.

Does it do it in 2 wheel drive or just 4?

The whining had occurred when I was in 2WD. I haven't owned the machine long enough to use it extensively in 4WD. Again, the noise reaches its climax at 36 mph. I'm going out again tomorrow, so I'm going to see if the noise remains consistent. Don't worry, my dealer will be getting a look at it before the warranty period ends.

I used to run a Brute before I bought my 800 Outty there a few weeks ago. But if we're on the same wavelengths abaout the saem noises, then it's the noise from the belt.
My brute actually whined louder and for a longer period of time, but the the outlander does in fact have a whine coming from the Bbelt as well. The only way i found out was riding down an airstrip I put my head down a little bit on the left side of the bike (by the belt housing) and the sound was very prominent. I then did the same but on the right side of the bike and the noise was significantly quieter.

Thank you for your comments and observations. It makes perfect sense that the CVT belt would be causing this noise. Now that I've had the bike for more than three months, the noise isn't what it was when it was new, either. My newest problem, however, is that I can't get the trip odometer button to work. Looks like I'm headed back to the dealer before my warranty expires.
