My carb is gummed up and my exhaust is plugged up.

Grizzly 125 Carb

Postby threefortyduster » Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:30 pm

Ok, so I was browsing Craigslist today and found an 05 Grizzly 125 that "needs carburetor work". So this brings the question, would it be better off to actually try and work on it, or just replace the carb. The carburetor runs about $120 itself complete, but if I don't have to spend it, I don't want to. I can always rebuild one.

Also, how likely is it that it is just a carb problem and not an overall problem? The ATV only runs $1200, so it seems like a good deal.

I found it on some Boat part site...they have a lot of ATV parts since they are a Yamaha dealer. That sucks that its $300 for yours, considering the motors are so small, there really isn't much to the carb. My friend just ordered 2 for his generator, and they were $37 each.

So I picked it up today. It runs fine when you spray carb cleaner through the carburetor, but when you let it try to run on its own, it shuts off. Sounds to be like a needle/seat or a clogged jet. I guess I'll pull the float bowl off of it tomorrow and give it a thorough interior douching to go with its external and whatever I could spray on the outside cleaning I gave it today.

The best part...it takes like 5 minutes to take the carb off...so simple. You don't even have to remove the tank.

So I took the carb off today and cleaned the inside. That float bowl gasket is $11. Incredible.

So the real story is that it runs now. Still playing around with the idle to get it set right, and for some reason, it likes to shut off when you shift it into reverse. Not sure what that is about, but it will get sorted out.

For those of you keeping score:
$900, 6 hours of total labor, $75 in parts. It runs and drives great now, has a new spark plug, battery, and air filter.

Good Job on the 125....You may know this by now...but the Grizzly's require you to depress the Brake before you go in reverse..Safety feature...Don't feel bad...I purchased a 04 for my son and had the same problem...but then I looked at the sticker on the left fender...
