Postby ej92381 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 3:10 pm

hey everyone. from the day i bought this quad , it has backfired after i let off after hard acceleration or higher rpms. So... i installed a dynojet stage 2 kit, removed the exhaust baffle, put in a high flow air filter, and it still does this...ahhhh! its drivin me nuts! :x what can i do? has anyone else had this problem with thier outlaw? i know of one other person with a ktm quad with the same engine, and his does this too. any ideas? :?:

Sounds like it still isn't jetted correctly.

i dont see y it wouldnt be, dynojet usually does a good job with thier kits...maybe ill step the main jet down a little and see what happens. if that doesnt help do you have ant other ideas? maybe its a bad exhuast design or somethin

I know that a wide open exhaust like 2 brothers will backfire on decell even when jetted perfectly. The problem with Dynojet kits(at least it use to be) is if I buy a jet kit for my 2007 TRX450R up here in Colorado where the elevation is 5000+ feet and joe in California at 500 feet has the same machine set up, Dynojet is/was sending the same kit even though there is a 4,500ft difference in elevation.

how bad is it? will it do it if say your in 5th and just let off the gas or does it only do it in lower gears? My raptor will backfire and kinda like pop if im in 2nd or 3rd and left off the gas and go pretty slow like down a hill, i like the sound myself..

yes it does it in pretty much every gear, BUT....upon further inspection tonite i saw where the two pipes go 2gether was leaking alittle...theywere starting to come apart...AHA! so i loosened the collar and slid the pipes back 2gether more. ill let ya'll know if this makes a difference. o btw..dynojet includes different jets for different elevations

An exhaust leak will absolutely cause a backfire. I'm glad that Dynojet has corrected there methods. It is also cheaper to buy the individual jets.

well ......... i stepped a jet down, and my exhaust fix didnt work...still backfires and the pipes still come apart a little after riding.maybe its just the nature of the beast...lol.... but anyway, im bidding on an exhaust on ebay...fmf q4 muffler w powerbomb header. if that doesnt fix it then i guess im just gunna have a damn fast machine that makes some noise..im going to go with fmf just because its a ktm engine. ive run fmf pipes on my ktm bikes, plus the newer ktm dirtbike come factory with fmf's

You don't have to explain FMF to me. I ran them on my old Rhino and many of my previous bikes.

Check the Throttle safety switch & adjust. Just got my outlaw this spring, it would backfire sparatically in conditions like you said. On the last trip It started dying completely when I let off the throttle at idle. I messed around w/ the cable adjustment on the trail & it was fine again for a while, then would act up until I messed w/ the cable adjustment again. I am going to take the cover off the switch & adjust it properly now that it's in the garage. The Safety Switch is in the black Plastic box the thumb Throttle is connected to. It's incase the throttle sticks open on the carb when you let off the gas, it will kill the motor.

Get used to it, that's the nature of the monster ktm engine and nothing will fix it so you might as well enjoy it. A polaris mechanic I know and trust said they have tried piping and jetting and all the outlaw 525 still pop on decel, the only diff is that the pop is a lot louder with an aftermarket pipe
