01 Kodiak no start

Postby oothefuxdat » Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:31 am

Hello everyone  My first post here.

I have a 01 Kodiak 400 and it won't start not even power to the light or winch.

I checked the battery ,lots of cranks, checked the fuses ,all good

I'm thinking the ignition switch but I know what kind of a PITA it is to change so I'm wondering if anyone ever run into this prob and can point me to other direction.?

tanx in advance

Does it have a decompression solenoid? If so, you can fire the starter by running 12 volts to that. It will fire the starter after the auto decomp fires. I have a Suzuki 650 single cylinder motorcycle I did that to.I used a microswitch off the front of a dead DVD player. Its a very low current load to fire the decomp timer.

chances are good it is either the battery or the connections. Sorry, it may be battery time. Buy a good one! you can jump it from a car battery if the car battery is NOT hooked to a car, that will tell you.

i had the same problem on my 99 kodiak it was outside all the time and the switch was rusted inside, i sprayed wd-40 in it and it worked for a while, but to change out the switch was as easy as unplugging it and undoing the "nut" around the switch assembly. it was a bit easier after i removed the instrument cluster from the handle bars now i just remember to give it a little lube once in a while.

Is the winch wired thru the ignition switch?
I've never done it that way before....you need a test light and a little time- start at the ignition switch and see if your battery power is going down to the starter or to the lights. Since the fuses are all good, I would suspect like you do the ignition switch or the battery. Connections good there? Hard to do without being there.
