The large diameter creates a "flywheel" effect, that is, a certain amount of power is required just to affect the rotation of the flange. In other words, acceleration and deceleration of the axle assembly is slower (less responsive) than it would be without the flange. Plus, the excessive weight creates a negative "fly-wheel effect" the faster you ride. The design goal of the Durablue flange is to lessen this "flywheel" effect.
