

The Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest and Oglala National Grassland is located in the Nebraska panhandle near Chadron. The area consists of approximately 122,000 acres, including the Oglala National Grasslands. The area is mostly covered with trees and grasslands. Some primitive camping is available. The national forest area offers hills, trees and open spaces while the grassland consists of grass covered hills and sandstone formations. A popular place to visit is Toadstool park and a mammoth bone dig. Maps are available from the Forest Service for $6.Three areas are closed to OHV travel. Those areas are Soldier Creek Wilderness Area, Pine Ridge National Recreation Area, and Pine Ridge hiking/bicycle trail. People can ride in two track trails and are asked to stay on these trails. Do not make new trails. For safety reasons, ATV and dirtbike travel is not recommended on roads commonly used by cars and trucks. If these roads are used, please proceed with caution. Stay off of trails that are wet or muddy to avoid resource damage. Leave all gates open or closed depending upon how you found them. Stay right of way to oncoming traffic and trails users.
