Difficulty: 5 (Moderate)
Elevation: 8,500' to 12,000'
The Kingston Peak road crosses an above-treeline bench at 12,000 feet elevation. This affords spectacular views of nearby James Peak, as well as more distant views from Longs Peak to the north to Mt. Evans to the south. However, it also means there is snow late in the year so the season is short. Much of the distance is on the high-clearance 2WD Apex Road. About 8 miles is true 4WD, with some quite steep, rocky sections near the top. The road passes the trailhead for the James Peak Lake and Ute Trails, and also a trail to James Peak. Much of this area is in the Clear Creek Ranger District.
