Roosevelt National Forest Divide Ranger District This primitive road begins at Spring Creek Pass (10,898 feet elevation) within Spring Creek Pass Campground. Spring Creek Pass Campground is a low development campground that provides tables, fireplaces, and a pit toilet. No water is available in the campground and there is no charge for camping. The entire length of the Jarosa Mesa Primitive Road (approximately 8.6 miles) follows along the Continental Divide. The road climbs approximately 240 feet out of the campground in just slightly over 0.5 mile, then flattens out over the next 1.7 miles, where it runs through spruce-fir stands and open, grassy parks. From this flat, the road begins to climb some 830 feet over the next 1.8 miles to an elevation of 12,054 feet. This portion of the road begins in scattered spruce-fir trees which change to willow brush as the road gains elevation. From this point, to within 0.5 mile of the end of the four-wheel drive road, the route traverses open alpine parks. The road drops 320 feet in the next 1.5 miles and then climbs 485 feet for 1.6 miles to the high point along the route (12,220 feet elevation). The final 1.4 miles of the road drops from this point approximately 700 feet to its end, where it is marked, "No Motorized Vehicles (Snowmobiles, Scooters excepted)." Finally, the route continues to the west as the La Garita Stock Driveway Trail #787. Except for vistas of distance mountain peaks, such as Uncompahgre Peak (14,286 feet elevation), the route offers no other real attractions other than being a high country jeep road. Except for a spring near the road, about 2.5 miles from the start, water is scarce or nonexistent along the route. Directions from Creede, Colorado: 34.5 miles northwest on Colorado Highway 149 to Spring Creek Pass Campground at the summit of Spring Creek Pass. Turn left at the campground. Follow the campground road back until you see a set of well-defined double tracks going up a hill to the west. This is the Jarosa Mesa Primitive Road. Seasonal Information: Normally Accessible: June through Late September .
