Eagle Ranger District White River National Forest Stump Park , FDR 610, is one of the most rugged 4-wheel drive roads on the Eagle Ranger District. Starting off the Derby Loop, it travels through dry Piñon pine and juniper country, into ponderosa pine and on through aspen, spruce and fir forest. This road has large protruding rocks, it can be very narrow and steep at times and it has 3 to 4 stream crossings which can be difficult during spring runoff. There are some areas where the road is solid rock that has several ridges and ledges to drive over. The Stump Park Road passes through cattle grazing country, so be wary of cattle in the road. The road ends just before 2 small cabins at Stump Park, the only meadow near the road. SCENERY - Stump Park road provides access to the North Fork Valley, one of the most beautiful on the district. For several miles, it travels along a ridge which offers views of new forest regeneration from the 10,063 acre Emerald Lake Fire of 1980. PONDEROSA PINE STAND - Around the first mile of the road, it passes through a unique stand of very large ponderosa pine trees with juniper, Piñon pine and aspen. Such vegetative variety attracts abundant and diverse wildlife. HUNTING AND FISHING - The North Fork Valley receives extremely high fishing pressures on the area's lakes and hunting is popular. It is suggested that Forest visitors interested in more solitude, hunt and fish in another part of the Forest. Directions from Eagle: Travel 12 miles west on I-70 to the Dotsero exit. Follow the signs for Burns/Sweetwater, turning onto the Colorado River Road. Go about 20 miles to Burns, then take a left before the post office onto the Cabin Creek Road and go 6 miles up to the Stump Park Road, FDR 610. At the beginning of the road, there is an information board and a parking lot large enough to accommodate small horse trailers. Directions from Vail: Travel 43 miles west on I-70, getting off at the Dotsero exit. Follow the signs for Burns/Sweetwater, turning onto the Colorado River Road. Go about 20 miles to Burns, then take a left before the post office onto the Cabin Creek Road and go 6 miles up to the Stump Park Road, FDR 610.
