WINCHESTER BAY — Jeremy Noel cringes every time he hears an ambulance siren blaring past Dune Country ATV Rentals on Discovery Point Lane. And this time of year, the store manager does a lot of cringing.

The all-too-familiar sound means yet another all-terrain vehicle rider has likely planted face or limb firmly in the sand at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Nova Scotia taxpayers have kicked in $10,000 for a national study on the health benefits of riding all-terrain vehicles and off-road motorcycles.

Glenn Friel, a spokesman for the Department of Health Promotion and Protection, said this week that there isn’t much information available on the topic and that’s why the department decided to contribute.

SICILY ISLAND -- Gina Clanton never had been on a four-wheeler off-road before one of her first dates with Tyson Clanton, who is now her husband. After a few spins around the trails in Camp Livingston she was hooked.

"I love it," she said of riding her four-wheeler. She was resting Saturday after a morning of riding the trails at Catahoula Recreation Park in Sicily Island. "It's great and a fun way to spend time with the family. It's our hobby."

WASHINGTON, June 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an expanded recall of Polaris Industry ATVs due to a fire hazard.

About 95,000 of the Polaris All-Terrain Vehicles were previously recalled. The latest announcement, issued Thursday, adds 700 more to the recall list.

The recalled ATVs are all from model year 2004 and include 16 Scrambler and Sportsman models with defective Electronic Control Modules installed during service work.

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board should be applauded for its recent decision to discard proposals to expand all-terrain-vehicle trails through the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest.

The board voted 7-0 to drop plans for the 68-mile, $12.5 million trail, which had become one of the most contentious issues for the Department of Natural Resources. The forest is north of Rhinelander in northeastern Wisconsin.

In the wake of BMW's ever-increasing arsenal of sports motorcycles KTM has slashed back with the launch of a new All Terrain Vehicle series which was unveiled this week at the trendsetting Motorcycle Fair in Barcelona, Spain.

The benchmark model in the series is the SX ATV, which represents the entire research and development effort of the Austrian manufacturer.

Honda ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) have been recalled because of a defect that could cause them to lose steering control. The steering defect, which affects about 1,400 Model Year 2008 Honda TRX500 ATVs, has not resulted in any reported injuries.

NORTH BEND, Ore. - It's been in the works since 2001, but a new ATV recreational park north of North Bend will be open to the public starting Thursday, May 1.

Purchased with a grant from Oregon State Parks and the ATV Allocation Committee, the 135-acre Riley Ranch now offers 50 camp sites with water and electricity, two camping cabins, limited ATV riding and access to Butterfield Lake.

The plan is to connect Kentucky trails to those in West Virginia, making an ATV ride a multi-state adventure.

Yamaha is recalling the Rhino ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) amid concerns that brakes on the Rhino ATV may fail. The recall, which covers about 7800 Rhino Side-by-Side ATVs, is just the latest safety issue to plague the Yamaha Rhino ATV, which some consider to be the most dangerous ATV on the market.

The newest step in the move to “green” farming could be the quietest so far.

The Register was on hand recently when Robert Jordan, vice president at Buckland Vineyard Management, and Juvenal Magdaleno, a foreman for Buckland, tried out their new all-electric ATV from Barefoot Motors in Sebastopol.

The U.S. Forest Service is about to make a major decision about where ATVs can go and cannot go in the vast Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota. This decision will keep some of them open. Others will be closed. The stakes are high, in part, because the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is located in the national forest.
