Pros: ALMOST EVERYTHING
Cons: TRAILER HITCH - boiling gas
I have a 2002, 660 Grizzly that I bought new. The first thing I did was get new tires and wheels. In stock form the Griz is a little narrow. and the stock tires a pretty whimpy for Alaska. I put ITP aluminum wheels and 27" 589 tires on it. What a difference! This put the tires out side of the fenders so I added factory flares. The tires still stick out an inch or so but they do the trick and keep me mud free. I had to crank the shock spring settings all the way up to compensate for the nearly five inches wider stance. I put on the front and rear rack extensions ( a must for Alaska) When we go out, we are on our own to get back, so one has to carry enough gear to fix any problem that may come up. I added all the factory aluminum guards, bash plates etc. The problem with aluminum is that when it is bent it stays bent. I purchased a 1/4 inch thick full body skid plate from an outfit in Canada and installed it. A Wern 2500# winch is on the front with a Wern bumper and trail lights. Heated grips and thumb warmer were added. I carry a Kolpin flat gas can on the rear rack and two Kolpin gas can Jr's on the back of the rear rack. The Griz is kinda fuel thirsty! To make the best use of low octane fuel, I put a Fitz Fuel Catylist in the tank. This is a one time addition and lasts over 150k miles and optimizes the fuel and keeps it fresh without the aid of stabilizers. (helps with the boiling fuel problem) It ups the octane of the fuel. ( It works like a champ) I carry an assortment of bungie cords, straps, etc. I made a tube from 4" black ABS pipe to carry my nylon tow straps and snatch block in, and fastened it to the front bumper. A small shovel and a tarp are attached to the front bumper in addition. You never now when you might need a tarp. I have two (one on each side) Kolpin Transport 5.0 gun boots. I seldom carry two rifles, but I can if I feel the need. Up here you are part of the food chain, not the top of it! I have Cabela's fender bag and soft luggage front and rear. I put a master switch on the winch that allows me to shut it off so it the in-out button is hit it does not work until I flip it. The only bad thing is the lame set up for the trailer hitch. If you let the bolts get loose they will break off and if you are out in the boonies with a trailer, you have a real problem! I think they have fixed this on the new machines. I have never had one ounce of trouble with this machine since day one. I use it to plow my 300 foot long drive way in the winter, I have almost 2000 miles on it and have not spent one dime for repairs, just oil and filters and diff lube. The boiling fuel seems to have been eliminated with the last recall they performed. I am sure living in Alaska keeps this to a minimum. I feel for those of you who live in HOT climates. Guess you will have to buy one of the new ones with the gas tank under the seat in stead of on top of the motor. All in all the Yamaha 660 Grizzly is one awesome machine!
